THUNDER dOWNUNDER strike twice in 2026 with ECL S51 Cup 1 win

THUNDER dOWNUNDER have firmed for the challengers tag at next month's DFRAG Wildcard LAN following a 2-1 (13-8, 9-13, 13-6) victory over Ground Zero at ECL Season 51 Cup 1 on Tuesday night.

Nuke was quite the hiccup but TDU got the job done in three maps, with Jay "Liazz" Tregillgas (1.55, +65 K/Diff) topping charts in both the grand final and across the bracket as a whole, leading in four major stats.

In an ECL marred by five forfeits, TDU was hardly tested in their ECL Cup upper bracket run, dropping 16 rounds in six maps including a commanding 2-0 (13-5, 13-4) over GZ in the upper bracket final.

GZ was pushed twice by Mindfreak but survived the lower bracket scare to meet TDU for a rematch in the grand final. It wasn't the best of starts for the boys in green, struggling to just three rounds on their Dust 2 T-side.

Chris "dexter" Nong (21-13, 1.51) and Tyson "asap" Paterson (16-10, 1.49) were unstoppable on defense and while GZ threatened a comeback, there simply weren't enough rounds to win.

Momentum was with GZ, however, and they took charge on Nuke. Nine-straight rounds, including four successful retakes, made up an astounding 11-1 half with Damon "damyo" Portelli (19-17, 1.20) leading GZ from the front.

TDU was down but not out; their CT- side was proving just as strong as GZ's with an eight-round streak of their own. It took a four-kill round from Tom "apocdud" Henry (15-13, 1.31) to break the run, with GZ swiftly preventing the comeback and forcing Inferno.

It was a rollercoaster first half with the teams trading streaks, but TDU put their foot down heading into halftime. Ultimately, it was an anticlimactic end to the series; GZ struggled on the T-side, leaving TDU to claim 13 of the last 15 rounds to take out the series 13-6.

TDU lock in an ECL Regional Finals spot early with the grand final win, extending their series win streak in OCE to 14. To date, since their formation back in October, TDU has lost just one series (to Ground Zero in November).

That streak doesn't include a match against perennial regional leaders SemperFi, but the pair will finally meet in mid-March in Brisbane for the DFRAG Wildcard LAN.

SemperFi is returning from a tumultuous European bootcamp; several LAN wins at PLAYR Masters and United21 x Esplay Challenge 1 saw the squad nab valuable VRS points, but they were twice thwarted in their attempt to qualify for PGL Bucharest.

TDU and SemperFi will be joined by Ground Zero, Mindfreak, Rooster and more for DFRAG Wildcard LAN, before a return to online action for ECL S51 Cup 2 — another shot at a spot in ECL Regional Finals — on March 20.
